Today we profile and celebrate Seiko Miura from Utatsu, Minami Sanriku in Tohoku. Seiko and her husband lost their beachside home and business in the tsunami in 2011. They made the decision to rebuild and opened their new guesthouse several years ago.
What do you think Japanese companies and/or government needs to do to help women in Japan?
Miura san would like to see decent job opportunities created for young people. Jobs that keep them from feeling they have to leave and go and live in the city. Create meaningful jobs, so that young people can build a new community and move beyond 3.11.
What advice do you have for the next generation of women in Japan?
Miura san’s advice to the next generation: don’t rely on people to do things for you, use your own initiative and your own ‘power’ to change things. Move forward not backwards.
