Akiko Yamakawa went to school in London from 4 to 9 years old. She came back to Japan, studied hard and became a lawyer. After 18 years at global law firm Freshfields, Akiko and some colleagues set up Vanguard Lawyers Tokyo. Akiko speciaises in employment/general disputes.
What do you think Japanese companies and/or government needs to do to help women in Japan?
There is so much that needs to be done that I feel like I don't know where to start, but work style reform, both for men and women, is a must.
What advice do you have for the next generation of women in Japan?
Freedom can only be enjoyed if you are independent, both financially and spiritually. I hope that you all become an independent woman and enjoy your freedom!

日本の政府や企業に期待する、女性が活躍しやすくなるための支援などのようなものがあるでしょうかという質問に対して、山川先生はやるべきことが多すぎて、どこから始めればいいのか分からないくらいですが、男女含めて、働き方の見直しは急務だと思っています。
次世代の若い女性たちへ何かアドバイスはありますか？
次世代への若い女性たちへアドバイス:自由というのは、経済的にも精神的にも自立して初めて謳歌できるものです。自立した大人の女性になって、自由に羽ばたいてください！
